  3. I pointed to one of the devices on display and asked, “How much for this one?” 300 kuai. My Mandarin is a bit rusty, so I had to ask again. Slowly, the stall owner repeated renminbi 300 yuan. If this were a movie, the lights would have dimmed and all the activity in the room frozen. 300 renminbi is US $ 45. And that was the initial offer price given to a bewildered foreigner in China, no haggling. I felt a literal shock.

  4. Since the late 1970s, the concept of a personal computer was based on a few precepts: being personal, the computer you were using could be opened up and modified, as could the software you installed on it. But recent trends seem to point to a future where such capabilities no longer exist. Based on the maker’s assumption of “if you can’t open it, you don’t own it,” we can now extrapolate that the future of computing is not one that will be kind to tinkerers.

  6. You won't find a better media center than the open-source XBMC, but most people don't have the space or desire to plug a noisy PC into their TV. Instead, I converted a cheap nettop into a standalone XBMC set-top box. Here's how.
