  1. A different kind of #MeToo story, about several women who worked for the same man. They tell us not only about their troubling encounters with him, but also about their lives beforehand. Who were they when they entered the workplace, and how did their personal histories shape the way they dealt with his harassment?

  4. Greetings, newcomers, old friends, random internet strangers and bots of every flavor. Since a lot of people have recently discovered my work, it was suggested to me that I might like to throw together some links of the choicest stuff I’ve come out with in the past not-so-long. I’m very tired and I had about fifteen minutes to do this, but here you go. Knock yourself, figuratively speaking, out.

  5. Über Pornodarstellerinnen erfährt man viel, aber wer sich für Dichterinnen interessiert, wird bei Weitem nicht so gut bedient. Weil bei Wikipedia fast nur Männer Einträge schreiben. Woran liegt das?

  6. Upon request of the FEMM Committee, the European Parliament's Policy Department for Citizens' Rights and Constitutional Affairs examined the actions taken at the international and European level to empower women on the Internet. The research aims at exploring the opportunities, risks/threats and challenges for women in relation to the digital world and the Internet, notably in the areas of employment, entrepreneurship, cyber-activism, stereotyping, harassment, sexual violence and trafficking/modern slavery.

  7. Hi. My name is Zoe, and I make weird video games with some degree of success (and make them playable for free, if you're so inclined). My life is generally pretty uncomplicated, I guess, aside from the fact that a month ago the Internet decided to make me the center of a supposed global conspiracy. I made the mistake of dating a guy who would later go on to write a several-act manifesto about my alleged sex life and post it to every forum he could create a handle for. Normally, this would blow over with little more than a "whoa, check out THAT guy," but since I work in an industry that has very strong feelings about women, it quickly mutated from a jilted ex's revenge-porn to one of the most intense scandals in recent gaming history.

  9. Much has already been discussed about the “Donglegate” incident, from how everyone lost (both were fired) and what Richards should have done instead, to the very dangers of asking what could have been done differently at all. The resulting brouhaha is the kind of zeitgeisty moment that only happens when inflammatory topics combine: sexism in tech, social shaming, and the potential of social media to generate intense and unwanted publicity.

  10. My goal is to give the people (sometimes organizations) in charge of the conferences and the presenters at such conferences more options, or maybe more understanding on the differences between neutral and radical. And maybe to stir the pot a bit regarding which types of practices bring about change.

  11. Earlier this year, women became the majority of the workforce for the first time in U.S. history. Most managers are now women too. And for every two men who get a college degree this year, three women will do the same. For years, women’s progress has been cast as a struggle for equality. But what if equality isn’t the end point? What if modern, postindustrial society is simply better suited to women? A report on the unprecedented role reversal now under way— and its vast cultural consequences

  12. “You, guy,” he said to my boyfriend across the
table. “ It’s not fair. You bring this girl here. It’s
not fair. ” We asked why not. “ Because all
women who come to conferences should be
available ,” he replied. Available to him.
Throughout the evening, whenever he got the
chance, he repeated that it “wasn’ t fair” and
that a female like me shouldn’t be at a tech
event if the opportunity did not exist for him to
have some of me. He made it clear that he was
finding it hard to control himself, and if a
breakdown in his self-control happened, that
would be unacceptable, but only because I had
    a boyfriend.

  14. In a recent post on TechCrunch, Penelope Trunk tells us (again) that most women don’t want to do startups. First, I’d like to extend that to Asians, African Americans, Gays, and Latinos. Oh, and white men. Most of them don’t want to do startups either, because most people don’t want to do startups for a whole host of reasons.

  16. Teaching girls that their appearance is the first thing you notice tells them that looks are more important than anything. It sets them up for dieting at age 5 and foundation at age 11 and boob jobs at 17 and Botox at 23. As our cultural imperative for girls to be hot 24/7 has become the new normal, American women have become increasingly unhappy. What's missing? A life of meaning, a life of ideas and reading books and being valued for our thoughts and accomplishments.

  17. Their study...found that women's reluctance to negotiate » was based on an entirely reasonable and accurate view of how they were likely to be treated if they did...."What we found across all the studies is men were always less willing to work with a woman who had attempted to negotiate than with a woman who did not," Bowles said. "They always preferred to work with a woman who stayed mum. But it made no difference to the men whether a guy had chosen to negotiate or not."
